Volunteers Matter: Melinda Hunley

Crisis Pregnancy Outreach has been 100% run by volunteers since its inception more than 30 years ago. No one has ever received a salary, which enables CPO to make an even bigger difference in the lives of Tulsa area women. We know that volunteers matter, and to honor them we periodically interview and highlight one of our volunteers. This week we hear from another wonderful volunteer, Melinda Hunley.

Q: How do you volunteer with CPO?
A: I have volunteered in a number of different areas for almost 9 years. Initially as a mentor, then I became the mentor coordinator for about 4 years. I also planned many holiday parties for CPO and Grace Girls. Now I do a lot of volunteer coordinating for some of our fundraising events.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with us?
A: About 9 years.

Q: How did you find out about CPO?
A: Through my church, Christian Chapel.

Q: Why did you choose to volunteer with CPO vs. other organizations? What is it about crisis pregnancies that drew you to us?
A: I was drawn to CPO because of the stories I heard during the CPO Sundays at my church. I was completely struck by how God brought families together through open adoption and stories from the birth moms about how CPO helped to change their lives completely moved me!!!

Q: Why is our cause so close to your heart?
A: Because CPO provides real/tangible solutions and help to girls going through crisis pregnancies.

Q: What have you learned about yourself since volunteering?
A: By helping with CPO I feel like I truly have a hand in helping God’s cause on earth!!! And that I’m pretty good at party planning!!! But on a serious note I’ve learned to rely more on God when sharing about the gospel. Working with CPO through the years I’ve had several opportunities to minister to girls in desperate situations and I always feel so incapable on my own. But these were the times that I just let go and let God! This was a huge boost to my own spiritual walk.

Q: How have you seen God’s hand at work in the ministry of CPO?
A: I’ve seen girls transformed from addiction and living of the streets to becoming a stable wife and awesome mother… all because of what God has done through CPO!!!

Q: What would you say to anyone considering becoming involved in CPO?
A: I would tell them to do it and prepare to watch God’s grace transform girls’ lives… and their own!

Q: When is the race?
A: This year’s race is on October 17th. Because of all of the nasty cold weather we had last year, we have gone ahead and moved the race up a month. That just means you need to go get registered ASAP so you don’t miss out on any of the fun!
Q: How early should participants arrive?
A: The 5K race starts at 8:30 AM so participants should try and be there about 7:45 or 8 that morning. Runners for the 1K, which starts at 9:30, should shoot for about 9. This should allow time for you to get parked and over with us and maybe even shop some of tables we have before you run!
Q: Is it okay to walk instead of run?
A: Walking is most certainly allowed! We just want to see all your super faces out with us. All we ask is that when we line up for the race that you hang to the back of the group. This allows the runners that are seeking a serious time to move to the front and set the new personal best at the Superhero Run! Similarly, we do allow strollers, but please single width only, and we ask you to also stick to the back at the starting line to allow those runners to pass.
Q: What kind of volunteers are needed?
A: Our volunteers are definitely the staple that holds this run together. We could never have had such a successful race last year without them. That being said, we are so blessed to have Melinda Hunley as our volunteer coordinator. She does an incredible job working with our volunteers and making sure they’re in a spot that keeps everything moving smoothly.  If you would rather volunteer than run this year, her email address is melhun79@cox.net and she would love to find you a spot!
Q: What will the t-shirt design look like this year?
A: We are very excited that the long sleeve runner shirt will be back! Our Superhero Run logo will still be on the front and all of our wonderful sponsors will once again be loud and proud on the back!
Q: How can readers help get the word out?
A: Yes! Please help us spread the word. The way the website is laid out makes it so easy for you to create your team. Be it a company, church, or family… make a team and recruit like crazy! We have prizes for the biggest! We also have flyers that you can pick up and distribute in your office, church, gym, etc. In the last few year surveys reported that our biggest source of advertising was word of mouth. You are our biggest asset! You can contact me at kboatman38@yahoo.com to get flyers for distribution.
Q: Where do we register and what is the deadline?
A: Registration is open at http://thesuperherorun2015.eventbrite.com! From there you can register as an individual or as a team and get all ready to go! Be sure you get registered ASAP to get your t-shirt ordered. There is no deadline, we will be accepting registrations right up to race day, but the only way you’re guaranteed a shirt is if you’re registered by October 10th.
Q: Are there prizes?
A: We will have our wonderful runner medals again this year and well as those prizes again for the best costumes and the biggest teams. We have so much fun with those fantastic masks, tutus, and of course the occasional cape! We will also be doing giveaways and prizes on our Facebook page leading up the event so be sure to go “like” the Superhero Run event page right here!
Q: Is there anything else you want us to know about the run?
A: I just want to thank you all for such an incredible race last year. I have the opportunity to plan this event with a great committee that is working very hard for you all. I’d like to thank Melinda Hunley again for coordinating some incredible volunteers, I’m thrilled to announce that Becky Martin is back with us this year and I cannot say think you enough for all of her help recruiting both sponsors and runners. Also a huge shout out to my wonderful momma, Angie Boatman, for joining our team at the last minute last year and taking over as the very best Registration Coordinator I could imagine. I’m truly blessed to work with such an amazing committee. Please join us on race day to show your love, support, and encouragement to the incredible mommas that CPO has touched!

2015 Crisis Pregnancy Gala “We Were All Changed”

1O9A0565The 11th Annual Crisis Pregnancy Outreach Fundraising Gala was a huge success. It felt like a scene from “FROZEN” with the huge windows revealing a winter wonderland as a backdrop for the silent auction. The theme was “Celebrate Life” and featured family photos in reclaimed wood frames to celebrate our rich family heritage. Hundreds arrived dressed to the nines with hearts eager to hear about the next chapter of CPO. The auction items were vast this year with everything from Glacier Chocolates, to a Thunder Basketball experience, car detailing from Nelson Mazda, jewelry from J.David, to a Grand Lake House. The silent auction is always a highlight of this gala!

The food was amazing, provided by Go West Catering and featured savory chicken, vegetable lasagna, and brisket with veggies and garlic mashed potatoes. The tables were adorned with some of our best flower arrangements yet, containing an usual mix of purple orchids, winter cabbage, white roses and artichokes. Each place setting was wrapped in a lilac napkin shrouding an oversized printed program, topped with a logo wrapped mason jar dessert of chocolate or red velvet cake.

However, the event design and food paled in comparison to the journey the entire house encountered in some of CPO’s best storytelling to date.

It began with founder Cheryl Bauman telling the WHY behind CPO. Honorary Emcee, Karen Larsen moved everyone with her compassionate retelling of CPO’s top ten 2014 accomplishments, which included:

  • Highest funds ever raised at the 2014 Gala
  • 30% increase in attendance of the Waiting Families Workshops
  • Fully funded new Honda Odyssey for ministry use
  • Well-attended SuperHero 5K run
  • 516 hours of counseling donated to women in need
  • 20 completed adoptions over 3 states.

Hearts melted over nine-year-old Ziona Webb’s retelling of her adoption story just before she sang a duet with a CPO birth mother, Dionne White. Together they performed “Opportunity” from the recent film “Annie.”

What came next, none could have prepared for: “Jackie’s Journey.” CPO’s corporate sponsor chair and mother of four adopted children opened the window of her heart in a 9 minute video chronicling her journey through loss of children through failed pregnancies and adoptions and an infant death. Her story had one of the most compelling endings — and one only God Himself could have written. Won’t spoil the ending: see it here.

Friend of CPO, Co-Event Chair and CEO of Hampton Creative, Johnie Hampton, closed out the formal program with a heart-felt challenge to use personal influence to spread the CPO story. He also asked for a monthly commitment to CPO so that the organization is not so financially dependent on large events like this gala (which can be threatened by weather).

Before moving into the live auction, a winner was drawn from the NEW “Best of the Best” tickets sold. Earlier in the evening CPO sold 100 tickets for $100, with the winner getting their pick of any live auction item. Congrats to that winner who picked the Chicago Bears Experience!

The event closed with the traditional live auction let by Tulsa’s renowned charity auctioneer, Jay Litchfield. Highest bids went to the Pagosa House in Colorado and orthodontic braces!

It was truly a magical experience and one that reminded us once again of how much the ministry of CPO is needed in our city!

The CPO Gala: A Night of Huge Importance

Written by Angela McLaughlin

When a woman comes to Crisis Pregnancy Outreach, a tremendous weight can be lifted from her shoulders. She will receive love, understanding, compassion and assistance throughout her entire journey. This assistance comes in many forms. It may be something as simple as clothing to wear during her pregnancy, or something as large as a safe environment to live in during and after choosing to make an adoption plan for her child. Some women need help to keep the lights on at their homes; some women simply need the comfort of a shoulder to cry on. Whatever the needs of the women who come through CPO’s doors are, they will be met. I write from experience, as someone who has been truly touched and changed by the help I received from this organization.

Like many non-profits, CPO holds an annual fundraiser, which allows them to continue their amazing ministry. It’s an inspiring evening, filled with stories from birth mothers, adoptive families and their children, volunteers, and women who are parenting their children. It’s a chance for the many lives that have been transformed by CPO to come together and celebrate this amazing, life affirming organization.

Unlike many other organizations, no one at CPO receives a salary. Volunteers who care deeply about the mission and the families they serve are the driving force behind all the amazing things that CPO accomplishes. And the same goes for the Gala. As Stephanie Johnson (a member of the gala planning committee) told me, “The secret to putting the gala together is volunteers! There is a committee each year that works for months on every little detail. Other volunteers help by picking up donations, working at basket wrap day, setting up the day of the event, working the event and even cleaning up afterward. If it weren’t for our CPO volunteers and the team at Hampton Creative, the Gala would not be possible.”

One of my the most extraordinary and inspiring moments of the Gala each year is the video testimonial. Volunteers work to put together a video, capturing the resilience and strength of the women who have been healed, helped, and loved through their crisis pregnancy. The video is always a show stopper, bringing tears and laughter, and reminding everyone in attendance of the tremendous impact of their help, whether the donation comes in the form of time or money. Stephanie describes it as “the moment we at CPO can share what our ministry is all about and why it is so amazing!”

The response is equally amazing. In 2013, CPO raised $80,000, enough to pay off the Transitional Home, ensuring that women who choose to make adoption plans for their children are able to rest and begin the next chapter of their lives in a safe and loving environment, something some of them have never experienced before. In 2014, CPO raised $100,000, enabling the organization to purchase a van, allowing them to provide reliable transportation to counseling, group meetings, and doctors appointments. This allows the mission of CPO to be delivered in an even more efficient manner, ensuring that no woman has to miss an opportunity for help and healing due to transportation issues.

As a birth mom whose life was changed dramatically by making an adoption plan for my beloved Samuel, I hope to lend my voice to this event for years to come. While the most valuable services provided by CPO are indeed free, it’s difficult to focus on healing when you’re unsure of your living situations, burdened by medical issues, or unable to attend much needed counseling because you don’t have transportation. The CPO Gala is a wonderful and beatific event, with a silent auction, delicious food and fabulous decor. But it’s more than that. It’s a request, a request for the ability to continue to provide birth moms, adoptive families and the children they love with the support that they need and deserve. It’s a party, definitely, but it’s also a vital fundraiser for a cause that truly transforms lives. And what could be more important?

Want to get involved? There are still opportunities to help with this year’s gala. We will have a silent auction prep session (wrapping up the baskets and items) on February 19th from 10-2 at the CPO office. Childcare and lunch are provided.
Help is also needed the day of the gala setting up for the night, working the event and cleaning up. If you would like to help please email stephanie@cpotulsa.org.

Want to attend? All the info you need is included on the invitation below. Here’s the link to purchase tickets: cpotulsa.org/rsvp.

2nd Annual Super Hero Run: A Smashing Success

Last Saturday, CPO hosted its 2nd annual Super Hero Run. Despite below-freezing wind chills, there were tons of runners in costume having a great time. There were bouncy houses and a create-your-own cape and mask table for the kids, a 5k timed race complete with medals, and a 1k fun run. The grand total has yet to be revealed, but we know that we raised well over $10,000 for CPO to use when helping pregnant women and their children. Hooray!

Check out the pics below to see a glimpse of some of the fun costumes and smiling (freezing) faces. And definitely plan on joining us next year!

A huge thanks goes out to Keli Boatman and her team: Melinda Hunley, Manny Rios, Mat Callegari, Angie Boatman, and Elli Nicholson. Plus all the other hard-working volunteers who came out in the brisk (to put it mildly) weather and helped out. We can’t make awesome events like this happen without your dedication to our cause.
